Courts Begin One-Month Vacation Today

High Court and magistrate courts have beginning today gone into a month-long vacation around the country.

Chief Registrar, Agnes Alum told journalists on Wednesday that the vacation begins today, July, 15 until August 15.

 She noted that the vacation for the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal will run from August 1 to August 31, 2026.

“During this period, all court registries across the country will remain open and operate normally to facilitate the filing of new cases and other registry-related activities,” Alum said.

She noted that the court vacation is provided for under the Judicature Rules, Statutory Instrument 13-20.

“It is intended to allow judicial officers to focus on writing pending judgments and rulings, weeding out inactive cases from the system, reviewing work from the previous period, and planning for the next period,” the Chief Registrar said.

However, during this period, civil cases will not be heard but criminal cases will continue proceed as usual.

Historically, the court vacation introduced by the British during the colonial era was used by judges to travel back to Britain to reunite with their families.
